Fire Threatens Brian Head

Posted by Scott on August 31, 2009

Brian Head Fire 2009

Brian Head Fire 2009

Fire fighters from Brian Head and Parowan are currently on site doing their best to contain the fire. However, high winds pose a threat. A helicopter is currently dropping water and everyone hopes the fire does not grow.

It is unknown at this time how the fire started. The fire is located South East of Steam Engine Subdivision.

I was pulling up to my office when I saw the police truck race up Bear Flat road with sirens blaring. I quickly followed to see what all the excitement was about. As I drop up the mountain I could see the fire truck in my rear view mirror.  By the time I arrived there were only three other trucks just arriving. We all grabbed shovels and began to put out what had already grown to approximately one acre.

The winds are blowing North East, so it doesn’t appear that this fire will pose a threat to cabins in the surrounding areas.

A Non-Skier’s Guide to Brian Head

Posted by Sharyn on March 28, 2009

Despite being a native Utahn, I have never been skiing or snowboarding.  So some might think someone like me would have little interest in going Brian Head, the ski resort known to be Utah’s best kept secret.  But I’ve discovered there are quite a few things a non-skier, or the skier who wants to take a break from the slopes, can do while up there.

A little research brought up quite a few things that the non-skier or snowboarder can do at Brian Head.

Snowmobiling
One option is to hop on a Snow Mobile. According to a brochure I found, there are over 160 miles of groomed trails and powder play areas.  You can rent a machine or take a tour with a seasoned guide through some of Utah’s incomparable scenery.

Snow Tubing
In my opinion, a great thing about snow tubing is that it doesn’t require lessons and doesn’t necessarily require any particular skill, but still is a fabulous way to enjoy some speed in the snow.  Brian Head Resort has a premier Snow Tube Park where you can pack in two hour sessions with six lanes of fun.
http://www.brianhead.com/mountain_snow_tubing.htm

Horse, Sleigh, and Carriage Rides
Horse Rides and Sleigh and Carriage Rides are available at Cedar Breaks Lodge.  This could be great activity that the kids would find fun.  Or something romantic that a couple could do.  To make a reservation you can call Betsy, the concierge, at Cedar Breaks Lodge directly at 435-857-4204

Ice Climbing
Another activity I learned about that I hadn’t thought of doing before is Ice Climbing.  I probably know less about ice climbing than I do about skiing.  But for those who want to know more about ice climbing in this neck of the woods they might want to check out the book Ice Climbing Utah by David Black.  http://www.amazon.com/Ice-Climbing-Utah-Regional-Rock/dp/1585920606/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1237832295&sr=11-1

Snow Shoeing
Strap on a pair of snowshoes and take in some incredible scenic views as you tromp around marked trails or back country routes. Equipment rentals and trail guides are available. http://www.scenicsouthernutah.com/outdoor_activities/xcountry.shtml

Day Spa
Cedar Breaks Lodge offers a luxurious day spa where you can be pampered and rejuvenated.  There are a variety of massages and facial massages, pedicures and manicures, and spa packages to choose from.
http://www.cedarbreakslodge.com/b3ta2/default.asp?view=dayspa

And there is always the option to take skiing or snowboarding lessons for beginners after all.  Maybe you’ll decide like I did, as I watched people ski and snowboard, that maybe it looked like it could be fun.

Brian Head Downhill 1

Brian Head Downhill 1

Kevin Talbot sent me this letter requesting a donation. I am posting it here in hope that others will also send a few dollars to help out. Latest Post.

Hello,

I have only raised 25.00 for this ride. I need 400.00 to participate. Please help as much as you are able, 5.00 would help. I have been training hard for this ride and I don’t want to be bumped because of lack of donations. I know times are hard, for me as well, so if you can’t please don’t!! Just let this email be an update on what I am up too. Thank you I would loce to hear from all of you.

I’m doing something about multiple sclerosis now and you can, too. Support me in my upcoming ride in the BP MS 150 on April 18-19.

The National MS Society believes that moving is not just something you can or can’t do, but rather is who you are. This is why they produce events like the BP MS 150 to raise funds for research, as well as comprehensive programs and services for people with MS moving closer to a world free of MS.

When you support the BP MS 150, you become a part of the powerful movement that will end MS forever.

I appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress.
