Winter Hike, Snowshoe and Cross Country Ski Event

Posted by Scott on February 18, 2010

On Saturday, March 6, 2010 the public is invited to Cedar Breaks National Monument Yurt Open House. Bring the family, a lunch, and a smile for a day of Cross Country Skiing, and Snowshoeing, or hiking fun.

Come join park rangers Paul Roelandt and Teri Saa and cross-country ski or snowshoe approximately 1 mile to a yurt which serves as the winte ranger station for Cedar Breaks National Monument. At the yurt, we will get warm, have lunch, and some hot chocolate or apple cider than ski or hike out. The roundtrip is approximately 2 miles.

Though this is Not a difficult route, a beginner’s knowledge is required of how to use cross-country ski’s or snowshoes, unless you choose to just hike. The terrain is snowy and hilly with an elevation gain of less than 300 feet. We will ski or hike alongside a groomed snowmobile trail and will be skiing about an hour each way.

What to bring? Bring a lunch and a small day pack. A wind-proof outer-layer (jacket and pants) and 2-3 insulating layers for keeping warm. Mittens/gloves, a wool  or fleece hat, and sturdy hiking shoes or ski boots that are waterproof are recommended as well as a personal first aid kit, sunscreen, sunglasses, at least 2 quarts of water and snacks. Once we arrive at the yurt, there is a wood stove to get warm by and hot chocolate or apple cider will be provided.

Meet us at 9 am at the Main Street Park Pavilion (Main Street and 200 S). Car pools will be arranged, or you can caravan up and back with our own vehicle. We will be back in Cedar City by 4:30 pm.

Cross country ski’s or snowshoes are not required for this event, but if you wish, they can be rented at George’s Ski Shop in Brian Head.

Note: Event Depends Upon Good Snow Conditions and Weather. Based upon weather forecasts for Saturday, this event will be confirmed or cancelled by noon on Friday, March 5th. Mountain Bike Stage Race – Brian Head

Posted by Scott on August 20, 2008

Brian Head Mountain Biking

Brian Head Mountain Biking

American Mountain Classic (click here to visit their website AMC) Bike Four Day Stage Race is a nationally recognized endurance race and it’s happening right here in Brian Head, Utah this weekend. At a unfamiliar elevation of 10,000 feet, the world’s top riders will be challenged physically. Brian Head is the perfect location for the stage races with terrain and temperature unbeatable. (click here to view race details)

Some of America’s top athletes in all categories and age groups will be competing in this race. According to Tom Speigel, the AMC-Brian Head director, “150 people have already signed up to compete in this race. 25 of them are pro-men racers. 15 are pro-women racers. This is a very good turn out and numbers should double at next years event.” This is a great start to a national and perhaps an international competition.

Some of America’s top riders will be here including Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (JHK of Subaru Gary Fisher), Sid Taberley (Sho Air), Jeremiah Bishop (Trek) and Tinker Juarez (Two time Olympian and recently won the Solo 24 Hour World Championship) are some of the top men competitors. Women competitors include Lea Davison and Heather Irmiger. When you come to watch you will not be disappointed with the action.

Tom Speigel - Brian Head

Tom Speigel - Brian Head

Speigel was very pleased to have great sponsors and support. Preparation is a lot of work for his team of about 20 people. Team Sho-Air and Brian Head Ski Resort are the two sponsors for this spectacular event. The winners are competing for up to $20,000 in prizes. “This could be one of the highest paid single events in the nation” said Speigel. All racers will receive a jersey and medals according to their ranking. “We couldn’t do it without our sponsors and we want them to be recognized.”

The favored feature of this event is the location in Brian Head, Utah. Speigel initially wanted to take the event from Cedar City to Moab but the plan didn’t work out. It spread racers out and made transportation more difficult. This made it difficult for amateurs and/or solo racers to participate. “Brian Head helps provide more for racers by allows for more support groups, Brian Head minimizes transportation necessities and has a better terrain” said Speigel. “Besides, Brian Head has excellent world class riding. It’s perfect.”

Press Release – Cedar Breaks National Monuments

Posted by Scott on August 14, 2008

The Las Vegas Astronomical Society Brings Its “Stars” to Cedar Breaks

Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah. As darkness falls on Cedar Breaks National Monument, a different kind of light illuminates the night sky.
That light, which comes from objects out in space transforms the night from a place of darkness into a place of wonder.

Cedar Breaks National Monument has some of the darkest night skies in the country. As Southwestern Utah grows and develops, “light pollution” in the form of stray artificial light is a growing problem which masks the beauty and intensity of a dark starlit sky. In the high elevation night skies of Cedar Breaks, the stars shine nearly as bright as they did in the time before the invention of the light bulb.

To celebrate and share the beauty of our dark night skies, Cedar Breaks is hosting a special 2-night event during Labor Day weekend.  Members of the Las Vegas Astronomical Society (lvastronomy.com) will telescope our night skies on Friday, August 29th and Saturday, August 30th beginning at 10 pm on Point Supreme.  These star party experts will illuminate your star viewing and answer questions about your interests in stars, planets, and how to help preserve skies in your neighborhood.  Visitors who own their own telescopes are invited to bring them along.

Dress warmly for the cool night air at this high elevation, and come prepared to enjoy a late night of star gazing at Cedar Breaks!  Cedar Breaks National Monument is located 23 miles east of Cedar City, via Highways 14 and 148. More information is available by contacting Robin Hampton at 435-586-0787 ext. 41 or the Monument’s administrative office at 435-586-9451.

Updated events and activities, program offerings, and other park information are also available for downloading at the Cedar Breaks National Monument website: www.nps.gov/cebr .
